Posted on: 16 Jul, 2024

Rabat- With the support of AfricaConnect3 and EUMEDConnect3 (EMS) projects, the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) convened its Bi-Annual Meeting between May 29th till 31st, 2024, at Farah Hotel in Rabat, Morocco. This gathering brought together distinguished representatives from various member institutions to engage in a rigorous exchange of updates concerning the progress, current challenges, and prospective developments within their respective National Research and Education Networks (NRENs).

Key points included the introduction of ASREN's new structure and branding; a comprehensive overview of ongoing and upcoming projects, namely AfricaConnect3, EUMEDplus and Medusa; and in-depth discussions during a dedicated workshop at MARWAN.

Each institution provided a detailed account of their operational milestones, infrastructural enhancements, strategic collaborations both regionally and internationally, and forward-looking strategies aimed at bolstering connectivity and services across their networks. The discussions highlighted the collective efforts to overcome challenges, leverage opportunities, and foster a conducive environment for research and education across the region. Furthermore, the meeting set the stage for future initiatives and strengthened regional cooperation among the network's partners.

The meeting was deemed a success by all participants, thanks to the collaborative efforts of ASREN and the CNRST team in planning, organizing, and following up.

The European Commission was acknowledged for their ongoing support through the AfricaConnect3 and EUMEDCONNECT3 projects, which have been pivotal in advancing research and education connectivity and collaboration across the regions. In addition, participants recognized and applauded GEANT for their consistent support and tremendous efforts in managing the financial and operational responsibilities for the AC3 project following the post-termination of ASREN’s grant contract.

The comfortable atmosphere, team spirit, and members' willingness to cooperate were tangible, especially with the recent changes in ASREN’s governance. Member institutions and NRENs demonstrated full commitment to achieving common goals and overcoming ongoing challenges to enhance research and education across the region.

Further details, including the list of participants and additional key points, can be found in the short report prepared as a conclusion of the meeting. Read more in the full report published on the website.
